Why recycle Computers?

An estimated 12 to 14 million computers are thrown into landfills every year and the number is increasing.  In 2004 upwards of 315 million computers were considered obsolete, rendering them useless even as donations, that number is expected to double by 2009.  Computer monitors and terminals are classified as toxic-waste, specifically for their Phosphor, Mercury, & Lead content.  These heavy metals pose a threat not only to the environment but to human health as well, contaminating ground water, oceans, and the surrounding land.  The Federal Land Ban Act of 1994 states, “Generators of electronic waste must dispose of this waste in an environmentally sound manner.  Only consumers and small quantity generators are exempt.”—Parts 260-279 Code of Federal Regulations.  However, as more and more households purchase computers, the consumer is quickly becoming a major component in creating computer waste.

In Hawaii there are a few computer donation programs in effect but as technology progresses at an increasing rate computers become obsolete in as few as two years.  Schools and churches, which once benefited from such donations, are now burdened with obsolete computers and are ultimately stuck with the bill to dispose of them.

What is Door 2 Door Computers Recycling?

OCR will begin its “door-to-door” computer recycling service across Oahu starting May 15th, providing convenient pickup of “ewaste” for businesses as well as consumer households.  This program will provide pickup of not only laptop and desktop computers, but monitors and laser and inkjet printers as well.  To make this service possible OCR will be teaming up with Pacific Commercial Services, a company dedicated to getting waste from computers off the island and into waste extraction and recycle plants.

The program will work in much the same way that our curbside-recycling program works, that is, we’ll come to you. The fee is based on a per-pickup rate that ranges from $30 dollars for residential pickups to $50 dollars for commercial pickups.

Why are there fees for computers recycling?

-The salvage value for equipment minimally covers the expenses of labor, pick up, shipping and de-manufacturing.
-Monitors and terminals are classified as containing toxic waste- specifically Phosphor, Mercury and Lead.
-The Federal Land Ban Act of 1994 states: "Generators of electronic waste must dispose of this waste in an environmentally sound manner. Only consumers and small quantity generators are exempt." –Parts 260-279 of Code of Federal Regulations (CFC). On Oahu, e-waste has also been banned from disposal as of July 2006. Large quantity commercial generators must seek recycling alternatives. Household and small quantity generators are exempt in accordance with EPA guidelines.
-OCR is partnering with Pacific Commercial Services, LLC a permitted hazardous materials broker providing recycling and disposal services.
